I have painted peonies many times in the past. In fact, I planted several different varieties of peonies in the garden of our previous home in Minnesota so that I will have plenty of peonies to use for painting. This is my first painting of peonies in South Carolina. Just as with any still life, I was intentional about the arrangement. I wanted my setup portrays the casual charm of the Low Country.

This sweet Egret which I named Juliet comes to our backyard often. We enjoy watching her, I always thought watching birds is for someone very old, haha. When she posed right next to the Duck Potato plant, I heard her saying, "paint me". I snapped a photo before she changed her mind. This was painted in the studio.

I like to use this antique chest in my paintings. It has subtle objects and varying textures on the surface. It also has strong lines which I incorporate into the composition of the painting. When light casts strong shadow lines on the surface, it was too thrilling to not paint.
